Don't create panic on Aadhaar linking: SC to banks, telcos

The Supreme Court on 3 November 2017 directed mobile service providers and banks to specify the last dates for linking mobile numbers and bank accounts to Aadhaar through SMSes and e-mails to millions of subscribers.

The court said all pending petitions related to Aadhaar would be clubbed with the main petition that is slated for final disposal at the end of November by a Constitution bench.

"The deadline for linkage of Aadhaar with the mobile phone number can not be modified by the government unilaterally (as it is fixed by the SC)", the Centre said reports the Times of India, adding that it has made a decision to extend the deadline for linking Aadhaar with existing bank accounts till March 31.

However, the SC didn't put an interim stay on sending out such texts, or companies following a questionable DoT circular to intimidate customers about mandatorily updating the Aadhaar number for continued mobile or banking services.

Social activists have petitioned the court to restrain the Centre from linking Aadhaar to bank accounts and mobile phone numbers.

Justice Sikri jokingly said that even he receives calls and messages asking him to link his accounts with Aadhaar.

This is what the Supreme Court was referring when it observed that panic might set in among people if clarity on the deadline to link Aadhaar to bank accounts and phone connection is not provided. Additionally, both the Centre as well as the SC have said that the deadline will not be extended. The Centre is likely to extend the deadline for linking bank accounts to 31 March 2018. "But I am also receiving messages to link bank account and mobile number with Aadhaar".

They have also objected to the CBSE's alleged move to make Aadhaar card mandatory for students appearing for examinations, a contention denied by the Centre.

Furnishing a copy of the Aadhaar will also be mandatory for opening new bank accounts, the Centre informed the top court.

Multiple petitions have been filed challenging the legality of the government order mandating linking mobile numbers and bank accounts with Aadhaar.
