Good thing the new 'Vette ZR1 has variable-ratio steering, helping to make this compromise less of an issue.

DUBAI - The King is returning, stronger than ever.

Chevrolet unveiled the 2019 Corvette ZR1 in Dubai yesterday, a 755-horsepower race-ready machine that's now the fastest, most powerful production vehicle the company has ever built.

It needs the downforce to keep it on the road because under the bonnet is Chevrolet's new LT5 engine - a 6.2-litre supercharged V8 petrol boasting a staggering 563kW of power and 969Nm of torque. Both packages feature a front underwing - a first for a General Motors auto - that increases downforce. First and foremost is the new supercharged 6.2-liter LT5 V-8 under the ZR1 hood. The blower used in this engine is 52% larger than the one in the LT4 of the Corvette Z06; also included is a dual-injection system (direct and port injection).

That power gets to the rear wheels through a seven-speed manual transmission or, in another ZR1 first, an eight-speed automatic. It's the first time in the ZR1's prolific existence that it has been made available with an automatic gearbox.

The 2019 Corvette ZR1's aggressive appearance is driven by function, contributing to its distinction as the fastest production Corvette to date.

Designers gave the ZR1 a new fascia "to channel air for propulsion-system and drivetrain cooling", GM said. The model also features a unique carbon-fiber "halo" hood and four new radiators. With a top speed quoted at "over 210 mph", they're not wrong.

"As the highest-performing Corvette ever, the ZR1's design supports its capability in every way", said Exterior Design manager Kirk Bennion. At the rear the standard ZR1 comes with a low set wing that provides 70 per cent more downforce than the Corvette Z06's aerodynamic package. Meanwhile, the High Wing comes with summer-only Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and a different front splitter, to go with its 950 pounds of downforce at top speed.

Those willing to reach deeper into their pockets can order the new Sebring Orange Design Package adding an array of orange accents combined with the main Sebring Orange Tintcoat paint. The driver-focused, well-appointed cockpit includes standard leather-trimmed seats, with sueded microfiber inserts offered.

GM hasn't put a price tag on the 2019 Corvette ZR1, which will go on sale in the spring.
