Chelsea boss Antonio Conte right to drop David Luiz, says Ray Wilkins

The post-match Chelsea chatter was all about David Luiz, following the defeat of Manchester United - but the real story was the man wearing the Brazilian's boots.

A recurring theme of Conte's first season at Chelsea was his reluctance to engage in any public spats with rival coaches, but the fiery Italian has made an exception in recent months to bite back at Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

Alvaro Morata scored the only goal of the game at Stamford Bridge as Conte's men recovered from a disappointing midweek loss in Rome to clinch a hard-fought home win.

"It is a tactical decision", the manager told Sky Sports.

Walker thinks the emphasis is now on Luiz to respond and raise his game if he wants to convince Conte that he deserves to be starting ahead of Christensen in the Blues backline.

"If I see that you are not in good form, it's normal". I have to put my face in every situation, and sometimes make important decisions.

Conte was asked what made him drop Luiz and the Italian simply replied, "It was only a tactical decision".

Abramovich had been a driving force behind the decision to re-sign Luiz last summer and regards the Brazilian as a world-class defender, but that did not influence Conte's decision.

Though it remains to be seen how the incident impacts on Luiz's future opportunities, the likes of Diego Costa and Nemanja Matic have seen confrontations with Conte lead to their eventual departures.

"I decided this way tonight, maybe I can decide a different way in the future or I can continue the same way". I have to make the best decision for the team. "I was very happy for this", Conte said in the press conference following the win over United. "Sometimes, I can make mistakes or sometimes I can do the best thing".

"I think that [Jose and I] shake the hand two times, it's enough".
