Badgers climb into College Football Playoff field

Clemson (11-1) defeated SC 34-10 on the road while Oklahoma (11-1) pummeled West Virginia 59-31 at home.

Georgia has been in the top seven of the College Football Playoff rankings since the first reveal, which came prior to its game against SC.

The national title game is set for 7 p.m. January 8 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Auburn would become the first two-loss team to play in the playoff but that would be because they beat two teams ranked No. 1 by the committee in November, and a second win against a Georgia team the committee rightfully respects as much as they do is a nice final push into the playoff should Auburn win. The committee is then debating whether Ohio State's clearly superior wins, and a conference championship, outweigh its one bad, blowout loss in a debate with the Crimson Tide.

Each of the top four teams plays a conference title game this Saturday against another top-10 team, creating potential play-in playoff games.

Big Ten West Champion and undefeated Wisconsin is that team, coming in at No. 4 in the fifth poll, released Tuesday night.

Less fortunate was Central Florida (11-0).

Clemson and Miami face off in the ACC title game with a playoff spot on the line, while Georgia and Auburn meet for the SEC crown with the same stakes.

Knights fans might be further nervous about the speculation that coach Scott Frost will return to his alma mater, Nebraska, as the Cornhuskers' next head coach.

Penn State is ninth and Southern California is the highest ranked Pac-12 team at No. 10. The committee can not pass over a team ranked, let's say, 11th to take a team ranked 13th because the 13th-ranked team is a more appealing draw with a bigger fanbase. "Certainly not maybe in this game, but I think the team we played tonight is a very good football team - probably one of the best teams in the country". That could give the Tigers a trump card on Alabama, which just lost to Auburn. An 11-2 Pac-12 champion USC? Alabama also will sit out conference championship weekend for the first time since 2013. The Huskies entered last week's Apple Cup ranked 17th, four spots behind rival Washington State, but Washington's decisive 41-14 victory lifted the Huskies to No. 13 and dropped the Cougars to No. 18. Michigan State (9-3), 17.

Those games appear to be win-and-you're-in situations.

Ohio State (10-2, 8-1 Big Ten) is coming off a 31-20 win over MI.

With No. 9 Penn State and No. 11 TCU the highest-ranked teams remaining, they would head to the Cotton Bowl Classic. The goal for UCF is clear right now, because the victor of the AAC title game against Memphis will secure a New Year's Six bowl spot.

Orange Bowl: No. 7 Miami vs.

Peach Bowl: No. 14 UCF vs.
