As many as 20 passengers wearing life jackets were brought ashore with the help of trained swimmers and local fishermen. "Many of the tourists got trapped under the overturned boat and died of suffocation", said one of them.

NDRF top official Love Kumar and others also supervised the search operation.

District Collector B. Lakshmikantham said strict action would be taken against the persons responsible for the mishap.

The incident occurred when the boat set off for Pavitra Sangamam at Ferry village near Vijayawada from Bhavani Island, the police said.

Earlier this year, 13 people died in a similar incident in the state's Anantapur district.

Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu, the Chief Minister, Opposition leader Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy and film actor and Jana Sena party president Pawan Kalyan were among who expressed their shock and grief over the incident.

China Rajappa, who was supervising rescue operations at the accident spot, announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased.

The bodies were shifted to the government general hospital for post-mortem.
