Local fire departments and emergency medical technicians took part in the event to teach children and parents how to react in case of a fire. Governor Rauner proclaimed October 8 through October 14 as Fire Prevention Week in IL to encourage residents to learn and prepare for emergency situations.

According to Henderson Fire Department's new Fire Prevention Officer Lee Edmonds, this year's theme is "Every Second Counts: Plan Two Ways Out!".

Smoke alarms should be installed outside every sleeping area and on every level of the home and, ideally, be interconnected so that when one goes off, they all do.

Close doors when leaving to slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire.

The Ashtabula Fire Department and NFPA strongly encourage residents to develop a home fire escape plan with all household members.

"If there would be a fire in the next room, it could be completely gutted out", he said.

In 2016, fires occurred in more than 15,000 homes in IL. "Never go back inside for people or pets".

The Federal Fire Department (FFD) would like to emphasize the need for everyone to know at least two ways out of their workplace and home.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has been the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 90 years.

For more information about the breakfast, call the Fire Department's Community Relations Division at (313) 596-2959 (no ticket purchases at the door).

Mathew Pridham said the street in front of the Firehouse will be closed for a simulated auto accident at 11:45 a.m., and the department's rescue unit will demonstrate how they cut open the roof and door.

"We've beat smoke detectors pretty well into people's heads, so if you don't have them, shame on you", he said. It is observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9 falls, in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began October 8, 1871, and did most of its damage the next day. "Practice your fire drill twice a year, once in the daytime and once at night".

Throughout the month, the department will be working with schools to provide programs on fire preventions and safety tips. Practice using different ways out, as long as it is safe to do so.
