The firefighter, who declined to give his name, said the majority of the victims ranged in age from one to four years old. Several outlets reported Friday that the death toll had risen to six children killed.

He also set himself on fire, police said.

Rodrigues confirmed that the man who was believed to have started the fire died shortly after being taken to the hospital, CNN reported.

A firefighter in the city of Janauba said on Thursday that the guard was among those injured and was in serious condition. Some of the patients are being airlifted to a specialised burns unit in the state capital, Belo Horizonte. The fire gutted the day care centre.

The security guard is accused of dousing people inside the day care center with flammable liquid before starting a fire.

President Michel Temer expressed his sympathy to the families. "We hope these things will not happen again in Brazil". "He has been an employee since 2008 and has never had a bad record so we could never have anticipated something of this nature happening", Mayor of Janauba, Carlos Isaildon Mendes, told the media.

50 people were injured, mostly with burns, as the blaze spread through the "Innocent People" nursery in Janauba, in Minas Gerais state, in southeastern Brazil, before it was brought under control by firefighters, according to a statement from state prosecutors.

Police said officers went to the suspect's home and visited his relatives to try to understand the motive for the attack.
