The princess, 25, sat behind Komuro, also 25, at a campus meeting five years ago when they were students at Tokyo's International Christian University. The couple started dating even before they went overseas and continued their communication after.

During a press conference on Sunday, Princess Mako, the eldest grandchild of Emperor Akihito, announced she will Wednesday her former university classmate Kei Komuro. "While I've worked to help the emperor and fulfil duties as a royal family member as much as I can, I've been cherishing my own life", she added.

"First I was attracted by his bright smile", Mako said, according to The Telegraph. Komuro responded, "Princess Mako quietly looks over me like the moon". However, the formal announcement of Princess Mako's engagement is expected to reignite discussion of the matter-if only to prevent the end of the imperial line.

He won her over with his "bright smiles like the sun", and the couple had a long-distance relationship for a year before Komuro proposed in 2013.

Princess Mako is Emperor Akihito's eldest granddaughter.

The princess will lose her royal status after marrying Kei Komuro, who is a commoner. But due to the unfortunate torrential rain that flooded northern Kyushu that month, the royal family chose to postpone the announcement. Sunday's news conference is the first time the couple has appeared before the public together.

As a result, lawmakers in June approved a bill that will allow Emperor Akihito to abdicate in 2018, which marks the first time since 1817 that a Japanese monarch has voluntarily stepped down while living.

Despite the union being accepted by her parents, under the Imperial House Law, princesses are obliged to leave the royal family should they choose to marry a commoner. His eldest son, Crown Prince Naruhito, will succeed him.

The couple had a long-distance relationship while studying overseas - Princess Mako in Britain and Mr Komuro in the US - for one year.

When the princess, in a fetching mint green dress, was asked about what her fiance means to her, she described Komuro as a person who warmly encourages her.
