The court sentenced Feroz Abdul Rashid Khan and Taher Merchant to death, while Abu Salem and Karimullah Khan were jailed for life, a lawyer for the federal police, Deepak Salvi, told reporters.

The court had convicted six terrorists - Abu Salem, Mustafa Dossa, Firoz Khan, Mohammed Tahir Merchant alias Tahir Taklya, Karimullah Khan and Riyaz Ahmed Siddique in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

An Indian court has sentenced to death two men convicted of involvement in a series of bombings that killed 257 people in Mumbai in 1993.

April 1, 1994: Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) (TADA) court shifted from city's sessions and civil court to a separate building inside the premises of the Arthur Road Central Jail.

Two former members of the crime syndicate of Pakistan-based underworld don Dawood Ibrahim on Thursday was sentenced to death for their role in the 12 March 1993 serial blasts case. Five persons' sentences were announced by the Mumbai court today.

Salem, who was close to (absconding accused Dawood Ibrahim's brother) Anees Ibrahim and Dossa, took upon himself the task of bringing a part of arms and ammunition from Dighi to Mumbai, the court had said.

Sanjay Dutt, who was convicted under the Arms Act, was sentenced to five years in jail. Later, 12 convicts were awarded death penalty while 20 were given life sentence. Salem, though his lawyer, has also argued that he can not be jailed for more than 25 years as assured by the Indian government. However, the court rejected his plea after the CBI claimed that it had enough evidence against all the accused and didn't need any approver. Two others, Tahir Merchant and Feroze Abdul Rashid Khan, were sentenced to death for the same charges. But since he was extradited from Portugal in 2005, a Lisbon court held that he can not be awarded death here. Second leg involving seven accused begins.

When TADA court convicted Merchant in June 2017, it had its own observations. Salem was extradited from Portugal in 2005. Earlier around 100 people were convicted in a trial, which had ended in 2007.

While Dutt completed his sentence in jail and walked out in February 2016, Memon was hanged on July 30, 2015.
