The former United captain will return to Old Trafford for the first time when Jose Mourinho's side host Everton on Sunday.

Rooney spent 13 years with United, becoming the club's all-time record goalscorer in January of this year he netted his 250th in United colours.

But the United boss stressed that he did not want sentiment to get in the way of his team's bid to stay top of the Premier League table.

"I am too long in this job to think different".

"I think, clearly, he is one of the most important players in the history of Manchester United, and I think the stadium will show him the respect he deserves, I hope before and after the match, not during the match".

"We can play better football, missing chances to score, but the commitment, the passion that they showed to us in the first half was much bigger than we showed together".

Atalanta director Umberto Marino admits "just qualifying for Europe was a huge achievement, but we keep riding the wave of enthusiasm" with Everton.

"I don't see a team on the pitch", said Koeman in his post-match press conference. After beginning their season with defeats at home to AS Roma and away to Napoli, they gained a confidence boosting 2-1 win at home to Sassuolo last Sunday.

Asked whether his own job might be under pressure, Koeman said he knew modern-day soccer was "all about winning and results".

Steve Nicol and Alexis Nunes talk the position battle of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial and which player has the edge early in the season.

He added on a man who left the club over the summer with 253 goals to his name: "He'll get a great reception from the United fans because he was such a great player for United in such a successful era as well". Rooney despite what many have said is still probably our most risky goal threat but the one big change that needs to happen is that Calvert-Lewin needs to start.

"He is a player adapted to the Premier League".

"I have the experience - we had a bad run last season, I had a bad run with Southampton, we came out of those", he stressed. In four Premier League games, the team has scored two goals _ both coming from Rooney, who has been one of the few players to escape criticism.
