Canelo vs. GGG: Alvarez says fight with Golovkin was never in doubt

Canelo-GGG is a reminder of how good the sport can be - how it used to be - when one simple philosophy matters most: the best fighting the best.

Nobody in boxing cuts off the ring like Gennady Golovkin. The Kazakh worked the head and the body with sharp bursts, putting on a clinic in stopping his dance partner in the eighth round with Steve Willies jumping in confirming the TKO.

Apparently, Golovkin had flu in that fight with Kell so was probably not quite himself which is perhaps why he chose to walk through the storm and end the fight as quickly as possible.

In terms of the size of the challenge and the performance, many will look back at this fight as one of the defining night in the career of GGG. Facing Mayweather highlighted that Canelo struggles to land effectively against fast footed fighters who flit in and out of range, which Golovkin is certainly not.

However, during one open media scrum with reporters - Canelo Alvarez took exception to one remark mentioned by a Mexican reporter who brought up something Golovkin said that annoyed him. "I want to win this fight because for me this win will be like a history fight, like so many fights, like Leonard vs Hagler and others from that era".

"I always prepare myself to give the best".

Alvarez and Golovkin face off for the WBA, WBC and IBF middleweight titles. He debuted at 15 years old, and has fought 12 current or former champions over that span. Golovkin on the other had has fought five current or former champions in his career.

"This fight with Canelo is important for boxing", said Golovkin.

An impressive win could land him a shot at the victor of Canelo v GGG who meet in Las Vegas a few hours after his showdown with American Monroe Jr. I've wanted this fight for a long time.

As Canelo has not been in with anyone the same size or strength as Golovkin, I think that power will be the deciding factor in this fight.

Ultimately, Mayweather showed the world he's an all-time great and that Alvarez still had work to do.

So what is Alvarez gets to rattle Golovkin?

Their last two fights have made me resolutely believe it is a Canelo victory.
