It will feature a new workout app, smart activity tracking and a GymKit app to connect the watch to gym equipment. The new watchOS 4 update includes additional features to help track recovery and other important features for working out.

Tim Cook said that the "Apple Watch is created to help people stay active and motivated so they can have a better day".

Apple Inc. on Tuesday unveiled a new smartwatch capable of connecting to cellular networks for calls, messages and streaming music, marking the first step toward liberating the Apple Watch and users from dependency on the iPhone. The Apple Watch will notify you when your elevated heart rate and when you are not active for a long time. Apple's success is unsurprising, and the Watch is likely only going to grow (in popularity, not size) with the highly anticipated addition of cellular functionality.

Apple shares rose 1.1% to $163.30 after the company discussed the Watch. Users with AirPods wireless headphones could also make and receive calls using just the watch. Another big highlight of the latest operating system is the integration of Siri, Apple's voice assistant.

The new smartwatch is powered by a Dual-Core processor offering 70% more performance. The original Apple Watch was announced in September 2014 and released in April 2015, while its follow up was announced and released in September 2016, alongside the iPhone 7.

The watch will be available to order on September 15 date and will start at $329 - the watch will cost $399 with cellular built in. The device is said to run for up to 18 hours on regular use.

Apple Watch has gathered ample traction in the past years, allowing users to do more than they usually would.

The event is expected to be jam-packed with Apple's newest products, with its 10th anniversary iPhone as the crown jewel.

The wearables market has seen some ups and downs over the years and it is predicted by Gartner that 2017 looks positive with Apple leading the way.

Apple today announced the third-generation upgrade to its smartwatch with the launch of the Apple Watch Series 3.
