Both Burch and the driver of the vehicle that fell multiple stories survived the smash.

According to police, the female driver hit the wrong pedal on the top story of the vehicle park before driving through a barrier and plunging into an alleyway. The driver of the BMW sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries, reports Statesman Media, after the auto crashed through a barrier and nosedived back to ground level, luckily smashing into the floor with its chief crumple zone first, which may well have saved the driver's life. The driver suffered serious injuries but survived. This is the second time a vehicle has fallen from Littlefield Parking Garage in a year.

"Per our visit and observation on the cables on the ninth floor, it does not appear that the cables were replaced and are loose", city building official José Roig wrote to a Code Enforcement investigator in a July 20 email obtained through the Texas Public Information Act.

The garage is now closed as a structural engineer assesses the situation. "My foot slipped off the brake", she said.

Bowmer said that the fact two incidents occurred at that garage makes her worry about the safety of all parking garages in Austin.

Burch and other witnesses rush to help the woman inside.

The gripping surveillance video begins with an SUV making a slow turnaround in a downtown Austin alley, before suddenly braking as the driver hears a noise.

Bowmer says the wires that serve as walls in the parking garage made her "freak out".

Bowmer says she thought she was going to die.

Temporary safeguards in the form of water-filled barriers have been put in place along the alley side of the garage where there are cables.

The garage owner reportedly intends to redesign the barrier.
