Thornton said Tillerson would continue to press China on the South China Sea issue while in Asia, where the United State has been pressing for rapid adoption of a code of conduct over competing territorial claims.

"Secretary Tillerson's travel reaffirms the Administration's commitment to further broaden and enhance USA economic and security interests in the Asia-Pacific region", the State Department said.

"So I think you've seen the engagement by so many high-level officials, with leaders coming here, with our high-level cabinet officials going there, with the president's trip upcoming later this fall, so I think it's really just a matter of naming it".

In a draft of a joint statement to be issued after an Asean foreign ministers meeting Saturday in Manila, the 10 ministers will express "grave concern" about North Korea's test ICBM launches on July 4 and last Friday.
