Naidu compliments Gopalkrishna Gandhi

CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury too expressed satisfaction over the number of votes bagged by the opposition candidate going up since the presidential election. The Election Commission had stated that out of the 785 MPs who were entitled to vote, as many as 771 had cast their votes. In fact, the PM was standing in queue even before the voting hall opened at 10 am.

The chief ministers of West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha also congratulated vice president-elect. "Gandhi offered Congress party's support in further strengthening the "Upper House" for effective scrutiny of legislations and Government policies", Congress said in their statement. "As you taken on this onerous constitutional responsibility that includes chairing the Rajya Sabha , I hope and pray that you succeed in your endeavors and continue to serve the people of our great country".

Naidu's rapport with Opposition leaders and his experience as a Rajya Sabha member is expected to help him in running the House smoothly. BJP member in the Lok Sabha Chhedi Paswan is barred from casting vote following a judicial pronouncement.

Mr Naidu, who enjoys good will and rapport across the partyline, had on being nominated as candidate for the election, said that he was no more a party man, and resigned from BJP's membership just before filing his nomination. Naidu's opponent, the Congress-backed Gopalkrishna Gandhi, got 244 votes. After his win, the Vice President elect Naidu said, " I promise to uphold the Constitution and the high standards set by my esteemed predecessors".

Ruling NDA's candidate M Venkaiah Naidu is tipped to be voted India's next vice president, also the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, in the election now underway in Parliament.

He also said that his mind was filled with memories of working with Naidu, in the party and government. Will cherish this aspect of our association. He was a "swayamsevak" in the RSS and joined ABVP during his college days.

Naidu came to into spotlight for his prominent role in Jai Andhra movement of 1972.

Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi also lauded Naidu and said he would strengthen the democratic principles as Vice President of India and Chairman of Rajya Sabha.

As the Rural Development Minister in the Vajpayee government, Naidu pushed several reforms, including the "Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana".

After his victory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit visited his residence in the national capital to congratulate him.

Veteran BJP leader and India's former minister of Information and Broadcasting; Urban Development; and Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, is the most likely victor of this weekend's vice-presidential election of India.
