The chief justice of the Ohio Supreme Court is calling the shooting attack on a judge going to work a cowardly ambush.

Judge Joseph Corabi said he and the county's two other judges park in reserved spots next to the courthouse in eastern Ohio.

The attack "reminds us all of the very real potential for violence against judges", Maureen O'Connor said. It was not immediately clear how many shots were fired in the exchange.

Republican Gov. John Kasich (KAY'-sihk) says he's been told the judge is expected to survive.

Abdalla said it appears the suspect walked up to the judge as he approached the courthouse and shot him several times in the stomach at point-blank range.

This story has been corrected to show that the probation officer, not the judge, is believed to have fired the shot that killed the gunman.

"Clearly looking at the one video, you see the attacker coming up toward him", Mavromatis said. She said Nathaniel Richmond did have a criminal history and was involved in a pending case, but it was unclear if that case had anything to do with the shooting.

The suspected shooter was killed by a probation officer who returned fire.
