North Korea's official news agency threatened to make the United States "pay the price for its crime thousands of times", and North Korea's foreign minister warned that warned that Pyongyang "will, under no circumstances, put the nuclear and ballistic missiles on the negotiating table".

Trump issued the warning during a briefing on opioid addiction at his golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey.

"They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen", Trump said. "They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen", Trump said, according to Reuters.

The latest moves by Pyongyang point to a likely missile test in the days ahead or it could be a defense measure should the U.S. Navy dispatch more warships to the Korean peninsula, officials said.

The revelation comes a day after North Korea said it would launch "thousands-fold" revenge against the United States over the adoption of tough UN sanctions imposed after its intercontinental ballistic launches.

However, the official, who was not authorized to speak publicly, was chagrined that Trump would retweet a report about "something unimportant" that nonetheless "reveals something about our surveillance capabilities".

United States spy satellites have detected the North Korean military loading two anti-ship cruise missiles onto a boat on the east side of the country, according to a new report.

Earlier on Tuesday, Japan's Defence Ministry said "It is conceivable that North Korea's nuclear weapons programme has already considerably advanced and it is possible that North Korea has already achieved the miniaturisation of nuclear weapons and has acquired nuclear warheads".

In a separate tweet on Tuesday, Trump praised his administration's work at containing the North Korea crisis, even as the outcast nation remained unbowed. "We must be tough & decisive!"

USA stocks fell after Mr Trump's comment, with the S&P 500 falling to a session low.

The warning comes after the North threatened to retaliate and take "physical" action against the USA over the United Nations' adoption of new sanctions on Saturday.
