Drivers told to learn school bus stop arm laws

Madison County school bus drivers say that's the most common statement motorists make after a school bus versus vehicle crash. Vehicles must stop and should remain stopped until all loading students are aboard in the morning or all unloading passengers have cleared 12 feet off the roadway in the afternoon.

August brings hot weather, the State Fair and also the start of a new school year.

The two roads in Anderson where drivers say they've encountered the most serious stop-arm violations are Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard and Raible Avenue.

Stop for stop arms and red, flashing lights - This means a child is actively getting on or off a bus.

"The unlawful disregard for the school bus stop arm is not an isolated problem", said Puckett, adding it's an occurring problem across the state and country.

When approaching a school bus from any direction that is stopped with its flashing red lights activated and its stop arm extended, motorists are required to STOP, even on multiple lane highways.

In order to be a bus driver for the Fayetteville School District, you first have to get your Class "B" CDL or Commercial Drivers License.

Vehicles traveling in the same direction as a school bus must always stop, but motorists traveling in the opposite direction can proceed (with caution) when there is an unpaved median or concrete barrier separating the opposing lanes. Drivers need to be extra cautious in school zones as children walking in the sidewalks or streets can often be unpredictable. Past year in Kentucky, three people died in bus accidents.

"Let's have a safe and accident free school year".

Slow down and obey all traffic laws and speed limits.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, from 2003 to 2012, 174 school-age children died in school-transportation related crashes.

Watch and stop for pedestrians - the law applies to all street corners, for both marked and unmarked crosswalks (all street corners) - every corner is a crosswalk.

Students are instructed to wait until their bus driver signals for them to cross the road as a precaution against oncoming traffic.
