Manchester United have made an offer of €40m for Barcelona's Sergi Roberto in the hope of triggering his release clause, say reports in Spain.

Manchester United are firmly chasing the midfielder, who can also operate at right-back, and according to Mundo Deportivo they recently tabled a £36m offer for Roberto which Barca have rejected.

The midfielder in question being Sergi Roberto. Luis Enrique was in dire need of a right-back since the departure of Dani Alves, especially with Aleix Vidal failing to impress the manager.

Sergi Roberto has been deployed as a right full-back for last two seasons with the Barcelona squad possessing excellent midfield talent such as Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets and Ivan Rakitic. His release clause is £36m.

Yet the 25-year-old's playing time could be limited by Nelson Semedo's arrival and the potential move of Paulinho from Guangzhou Evergrande.

Following the incredible departure of Neymar to Champions League rivals PSG, Barcelona can not afford to see another first-team player exit the Camp Nou this summer.

Throughout the summer, Man United and Chelsea appear to have been at loggerheads.

It will be interesting to see what the young Spaniard decides as Barcelona has already deemed a player "not for sale", but saw him leave just weeks later.

Less than a week before the Premier League season restarts, Man United and Chelsea are again going head to head as the clubs battle to sign a Barcelona star.
