Wake to honor slain NYPD Officer Miosotis Familia Monday

Police are making sure that the Bronx church where a viewing for assassinated cop Miosotis Familia will be held Monday will do her justice. A candlelight vigil was held Saturday night outside the 46th Precinct where she worked.

The NYPD had initially planned to retrofit only patrol cars with ballistic panels and bullet-resistant glass, but after the killing of Familia - a single mother of three - the department made a decision to safeguard the mobile command centers as well. But the killing Wednesday of Officer Miosotis Familia by a gunman who walked up and blasted a single round from a.38-caliber revolver through an ordinary window has left some wondering if enough was done to protect her. She was reassigned to patrol as part of the department's Summer All Out program, in which officers formerly assigned to administrative jobs work 8 p.m.to 4 a.m., when most violent crimes take place.

She leaves behind a 20-year-old daughter and 12-year-old twins.

A funeral service is slated for Tuesday at the World Changers Church.

"We could have saved Officer Familia's life if we had bulletproof protection", he added. She said he had paranoid schizophrenia, and a search of his home after the shooting found medication, but it is unknown if he had been taking them.
