Naidu was announced the ruling NDA's nominee for the Vice Presidential poll by BJP President Amit Shah on Monday evening after the party's Parliamentary Board meeting, which was also attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "He has also accepted the nomination", BJP president Amit Shah said at a press conference after the meeting.

But questions are being raised as to why Naidu has been picked for the post of Vice-President?

Naidu said he had now withdrawn himself from the party.

"He had his own reservations but finally he accepted to be the vice-president pick of the BJP since he wanted to respect the decision taken by the top brass of the party", a person close to the to-be vice-president said. He also served as president of the BJP twice. "Narrow or broad? Is this in the national interest?" he had asked in response to the statement by Congress president Sonia Gandhi who had termed the oppositions contest in the vice-presidential elections as a "battle of ideology".

"The Rajya Sabha has a number political heavyweights - P Chidambaram, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Digvijay Singh, Kapil Sibal etc., in the Congress; Ram Gopal Yadav in SP; Mayawati in BSP, etc".

Known for his good command over English and Hindi, the NDA Vice-President candidate was recently praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his knowledge about the national Capital. The party which is under political exile in nearly the entire ofsouthern India has launched what can be calledits 'Mission South'in order to expand its base.

When Naidu was 10 years old, he was attracted towards the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), not for its ideologies but for his love for kabaddi.

Gopalkrishna Gandhi, filed his nomination to become the 13th VP of India after being asked by 18 opposition parties to be their candidate.

All members of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, including nominated members, form the electoral college for electing the Vice President. He was elected to Rajya Sabha from Karnataka in 1998 and was re-elected to the house in 2004, 2010 and 2016.

The fact that Naidu is from South India could also be a deciding factor.

Born on 1 July 1949 in Chavatapalem, a remote village in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, Naidu completed his graduation from VR College, Nellore.

He had been associated with the BJP since his youth and was an Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad leader and students' union leader.
