Open Championship 2017: Branden Grace's Record-Breaking Scorecard

Branden Grace insisted he was unaware he had made history as he sensationally completed the first round of 62 in a men's major championship in The Open at Royal Birkdale.

It was the lowest score ever recorded in a major championship and moved Grace up to tied second before the overnight leaders went out on Saturday.

There had been 31 rounds of 63 in the previous 441 major championships, with 10 coming in the British Open including Phil Mickelson and Henrik Stenson past year at Troon, but never a 62.

Grace went out in 29 and only needed a par at the last to achieve the milestone, which he did by two-putting to send the crowd into raptures. He said sometimes it helps not to know records.

He claimed the clubhouse lead at four under - just two behind leader Jordan Spieth, who was not even on the course as Grace finished. "I had no idea that was the lowest".

"It always gives you some momentum and some confidence heading into the round, and then I just played flawless golf". So, I definitely lost a couple of shots there on the last couple of holes. "I hit a great wedge in there, just caught a flier, a little bit of a jumper, and made it tough for myself".

The 29-year-old South African had 29 strokes on the front 9 and came back in with 33 on the back.

Grace said it was just a special day at Royal Birkdale, where the winds were calm and the scoring conditions ideal.

I certainly don't want it to sound like sour grapes but it's just a fact of life that they get round with irons off the tee these days.

Grace began the day at 4-over and in 45th place, after shooting 74 on Friday.

On the 18th, Grace calmly two-putted for par to secure the first 62 in major history.

Jason Dufner, who shot 63 en route to winning the 2011 PGA Championship, walked alongside Grace and shot 66. He made eight birdies with no bogeys to become the first player to shoot a 62 in the 442 major championships contested. But obviously I knocked in the 2-footer or 3-footer.
