Leader Spieth continues British Open charge; McIlroy fades

"That's not the same number as Grace, but that's as good a round", Els said. Tony Jacklin, the last English player to win The Open on home soil back in 1969, is the offi cial ambassador for the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship, August 8-11.

Grace's record score came 44 years after Miller was the first to shoot 63 in a major. But through 441 events and 157 years, the 62 remained ever elusive. I was so in the zone and playing the round so well.

Until he eased in a three-foot par putt on No. 18 that followed upon a marvel of a lag putt from yonder in the suburbs of the green, Branden Grace did not know a 62 would edit the voluminous record books of men's major golf. I thought if I could make a couple more on the back nine, then it's going to be a great score.

US Open champion Brooks Koepka ended the third round in a tie for third, six shots behind Spieth.

While Brandon's game was a jaw-dropper in the world of golf on Saturday, he wasn't anxious about going for that record at the time he made that final shot. But he had two putts to finish it off, and after dropping the first one close to the hole, he closed it out and made history. "And I was like, 'What are you talking about?' Now it makes the day even sweeter", he said.

Despite his epic performance, Grace remains seven shots adrift of leader Jordan Spieth - who could get a new business idea in the works after a tweet about the chewing gum superstition he has developed. The South African took full advantage as he pelted 16 greens today, the same amount as rounds one and two, combined. American Jodie Mudd shot a 63 during the final round of the 1991 Open Championship. Robert Streb shot 63 during the second round at last year's PGA Championship.

The Pretoria-born player has previously had four top-five finishes at majors, including a third place at the PGA Championship in 2015. I have had a five-shot lead in a major before and blown it, so I will not be thinking about winning this tournament.

Despite all his success on the European Tour, Grace had to wait until previous year to secure his first PGA Tour title at the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head.

Grace pounced on a serene day that was ideal for scoring at Royal Birkdale.

"I've been here for 15 years as a professional, so get to play links obviously quite regularly".

"My main thing was just trying not to bogey 18", he said.
