Children's apparel retailer Gymboree Corp. said it would close about 350 of its Gymboree, Janie and Jack and insane 8 stores nationwide - including 24 in California - as it restructures its business after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June. Store closing sales began Tuesday.

Department stores making similar significant store closing announcements include Dillard's, J.C. Penney, Macy's and Sears.

After this round of store closings, it will still have a handful of Gymboree stores in the area at Ridgedale Center, Twin Cities Premium Outlets, Albertville Premium Outlets, and in Woodbury.

Gymboree will close its stores in the Oxford Valley Mall in Middletown and Penn's Purchase outlet center in Buckingham as part of its bankruptcy reorganization.

The Gymboree at the Fox Run Mall in Newington will also close.

The company is also closing some Jack and Janie stores, but none in Central Florida.

When filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month, Gymboree said it planned to continue operating the majority of its stores while restructuring and cutting its debt by more than $900 million. Traditional retailers have been struggling to deal with strong competition from online companies and slowing mall traffic. "This was a hard decision to make, but we are confident that it is in the best long-term interest of our company, our customers and our broader employee base", Griesemer's statement said in part.
