Atari's new retro Ataribox aims to be like the NES Classic

Atari appears poised to re-enter the video game console marketplace, but questions remain as to whether the newly-teased Ataribox will emphasize next-gen performance or old-school nostalgia.

But now we predict one of three fates, none of which are pleasant: a rushed, no good console; a belated console with production issues; or an announcement in a few months time that the whole project has been dropped.

Back when the games console market was still in its infancy, Atari was a big name on the hardware side of things. Atari confirmed the presence of four USB ports, an SD card slot and an HDMI port for video output.

Taking a page from Nintendo, Atari plans to release a mini version of its iconic Atari 2600 home entertainment console.

It was also revealed initially that the Ataribox will have a wooden box much like the 2600 console from back in the day. That means the system will likely come pre-loaded with classic games - think "Pac-Man" or perhaps even everybody's favorite,"Pitfall!" - in addition to what Atari describes as "current gaming content". "We'll be giving you lots more information and status updates as we progress".

More information will be shared "step by step as we bring Ataribox to life", and Atari said there are "a lot of milestones, challenges, and decision points in front of us in the months ahead".

We've been hearing rumblings for a while that Atari was gearing up for the release of a new console, and today the console has officially been revealed.

Still, until we know what's under the hood it's probably sensible to manage your expectations. So, we can expect to see brand new licensed games for the console, although we doubt that we'll be seeing anything approaching Xbox One X- or PlayStation 4 Pro-level graphics here.

Unless they have no real idea what the Ataribox will do either, they're teasing us intentionally. Which new games do you think they will put on there?
