Authorities identified the gunman as James Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old home inspector from the St Louis suburb of Belleville, Illinois. But he did remember the friend disclosed what he knew about a reason Hodgkinson travelled to the D.C. area.

Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., and four others were injured in the shooting before U.S. Capitol Police fatally shot Hodgkinson.

SHAPIRO: I understand the wife of the shooter spoke to reporters for the first time since the attack.

The couple had been married for 30 years, she said, and he'd sold nearly everything from his business before moving out to D.C.in March.

Investigators say they still do not know if the shooter James T. Hodgkinson had an attack plan. "I responded that it was the Republican team practicing, and he proceeded to shoot Republicans", Duncan said the day of the shooting.

"I just want you to all go away and leave my neighbors in peace", she said. But when his wife was specifically asked if politics "consumed" him, she refused to say.

Hodgkinson is believed by investigators to have been a person "of strong views", a senior United States official said. But he said he was a passionate person who occasionally got into fights. Scalise remains in critical condition and will need several more operations, doctors said.

Hodgkinson appeared to be a volunteer with Bernie Sanders' failed presidential campaign, the Vermont senator said shortly after the incident in a statement. He was listed in stable condition.

So according to Sanders, when a insane person goes out and shoots Republicans, it's no one's fault but the shooter's. Matt Mika Mika, a lobbyist for Tyson Foods, was helping with practice when he was shot.

Fox News reported that GOP Reps.

A spokeswoman for Capitol Police did not return CNN's request for comment. Staffer Zack BarthZack Barth, a legislative correspondent for Austin Congressman Roger Williams, was shot in the calf.

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul said "it would have been a massacre" without Capitol Hill Police.

Richard Wagner, chief deputy of the St. Clair County sheriff's office, said afterward that Hodgkinson was told about the shooting by a journalist and has been with the Federal Bureau of Investigation since the shooting.

"The. ways they could do that is you've ever been treated by a mental physician or in a mental hospital, or you've been convicted of a felony, or have been convicted of domestic battery", said Wagner.

Watson said the deputy on Wednesday recalled Hodgkinson as being "very cordial". "From everything we've known in our interactions with him, he never tipped off and gave any indication that he was violent in any way".

In the evenings, Hodgkinson became a bit of a regular at the Pork Barrel BBQ restaurant just a few blocks from the ballfield where he opened fire.
