Tigers' Victor Martinez out of the hospital

Martinez was taken to the hospital with an elevated heart rate and cold sweats, according to health officials.

Ausmus said on the radio that whatever was ailing Martinez, presumably a virus, was "more scary than a general baseball injury".

He will not travel on the Tigers' upcoming swing through Seattle and San Diego.

Following the ominous diagnosis, Martinez will remain in the hospital one more night to undergo further tests. "In that sense, not only is it an eye-opener for Vic, I think it's an eye-opener for his teammates".

"The doctors think that after about a week, he might be able to begin doing cardio activity, light cardio activity".

Ausmus spoke to Martinez on Saturday, and he was in good spirits.

There's not a treatment template for this because it's so unusual in professional sports.

He drilled 27 home runs past year and gives the Tigers another power threat in the order alongside the likes of Miguel Cabrera, Justin Upton and J.D. Martinez.

So Ausmus isn't making any projections. "I would classify hitting as light cardio activity".

Martinez, 38, is batting.261 with five home runs and 29 RBIs this season.
