Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., remains in critical condition, hospital officials said this afternoon, after the House majority whip and three others were shot at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia, Wednesday.

"He will be in the hospital for a considerable period of time, presumably weeks", said Jack Sava, trauma director at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, who spoke Friday about the Louisiana Republican who remains in critical condition at the hospital in the District.

He said that Scalise has been mostly sedated but they've been able to turn down his medication enough for him to respond to family members.

Trump says Scalise "continues his very fearless fight", but adds: "it's been much more hard than people even thought at the time".

Scalise suffered a rifle wound in his left hip that shattered bones, tore organs and caused severe bleeding.

"Let us not jump immediately into blaming this one or that one", said Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas.

Congressman Cedric Richmond, who is pitching in Thursday night's game is expected to give an update on Scalise's condition at 3:30 p.m. The shooter was identified as James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old home inspector from IL.

Authorities say they are examining a cell phone, a computer and a camera found inside a white van where the gunman who wounded a top Republican congressman and several others had been living.

Scalise was shot in the hip on the ball field in Alexandria, Va., shortly after 7 a.m. and was taken to George Washington University Hospital in Washington for surgery. Capitol Police said they had "no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful".

He's also saluting the Capitol police officers injured in the attack on a Republican Congressional baseball practice.

Sue Hodgkinson says she saw no signs her husband was planning violence, didn't know what to say about it and wanted her family and neighbors left alone.

"He's in some trouble", said Trump, who had visited late Wednesday.

Aguilar plays outfield for the Democratic team; before the shooting, Scalise was slated to play second base for the Republicans.

Investigators said in a statement that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has searched the van, which was parked not far from the Alexandria, Virginia, baseball field where Wednesday's shooting took place. He died after officers in Scalise's security detail and local police fired at him.

Investigators say he shot House Rep. Steve Scalise before he was killed by police who had been guarding the congressman.
