"The vice president is focused entirely on his duties and promoting the president's agenda and looks forward to a swift conclusion of this matter", Pence spokesman Jarrod Agen said in a statement.

Cullen, who has experience litigating the Iran-Contra investigation, Watergate and the 2000 vote recount in Florida, is a former USA attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. The president hired his own private attorney, Marc E. Kasowitz, last month; yesterday, the Daily Dot reported via the Post that special counselor Robert Mueller will widen his investigation to determine whether Trump attempted to obstruct justice. He launched into a new Twitter tirade against it Thursday morning, calling it "phony" and the "single greatest with hunt in American political history". "Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?" the President tweeted in the afternoon, as he said the Clintons deserved an obstruction of justice probe.

Pence has fumbled publicly in the past while addressing the Trump campaign's Russian ties.

The White House says Pence will travel from August 13 to August 17.

While James Comey was FBI director, he told President Trump he was not personally under investigation when the president asked him, but that applied only to the period preceding his May 9 firing.

Trump responded to reports he is personally being investigated for obstruction of justice with a characteristic scorched earth defense: claiming mistreatment of historic proportions and calling into question the probity of his accusers.

Pence said on Twitter on May 10 that Trump had "made the right decision at the right time to remove Comey as the head of the FBI" and praised him for showing "strong & decisive leadership to restore trust & confidence of the American people in the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

The president has come under further scrutiny for his decision to fire FBI Director James B. Comey, a decision Trump later seemed to imply was related, in part, to the Russian Federation probe that Comey was overseeing. He has defended large corporations in Department of Justice investigations, and served as Virginia's attorney general in the late 1990s.
