One victim in Portland hate speech stabbing has Juneau ties

One passenger tried to intervene and was not hurt.

Three men-Rick Best, Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche and Micah David-Cole Fletcher-intervened in the middle of Christian's Islamophobic tirade. It wasn't clear if he said something to draw Christian's attention, but he stood up as Christian began shouting at him.

Christian pulled a folded knife from his pocket and concealed it in his hand.

Best, 53, died on the train and Namkai-Meche died at the hospital a short time later.

Court documents released Tuesday say Jeremy Joseph Christian was captured on video and audio surveillance saying he had stabbed three people in the neck.

Autopsies showed both victims died from stab wounds to their necks and Best also had a fractured vertebra. "Like, I don't know what to do after that, you know".

"She further stated, "'Me and my friend were going to get off the MAX and then we turned around while they were fighting and he just started stabbing people.

Only about 6 percent of the Portland population is black, while more than 70 percent is non-Hispanic white, statistics show.

"The idea that Portland is so liberal supersedes this dark, hidden secret about racism", said Karen Gibson, a professor of urban studies at Portland State University.

Two precious lives were lost this Memorial Day weekend in Portland and one more, almost so.

The Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League won a multimillion-dollar civil case in 1990 against the White Aryan Resistance on behalf of his family, and the damages crippled the organization.

In their effort to "respond to hate with love", the Muslim Educational Trust, a Portland-based organization dedicated to enriching "the public's understanding of Islam", and Celebrate Mercy, which works across the country to educate people on the teachings and misunderstandings of the Muslim faith, launched the campaign.

Friday's attack happened on the first day of Ramadan - the Muslim holy month, marked by daily fasting from dawn to sunset - and is the latest in a series of apparent hate crimes in the region.

In the suburb of Troutdale, an Iranian refugee found his home painted with racist graffiti and death threats.

The lone man to survive Friday's stabbings says he's having a hard time processing what happened. He said they will march in Seattle instead. Local GOP leaders denied the charges, but the tension spilled over into smaller protests in the days that followed.

"That was the first thing that popped into my head, 'I wonder if it's the same guy from the night before, '" she said.

Mayor Ted Wheeler said he appreciated Trump's words but stressed the need for action.

She also urged Trump to encourage all Americans to protect and watch out for one another and to condemn any acts of violence, which result directly from hate speech and hate groups.

In a video posted on Facebook, Joey Gibson of the group Patriot Prayer, condemned Christian and acknowledged that some rallies have attracted "legitimate Nazis".

According to reports, Christian was a known white supremacist and had appeared at an "alt-right" rally in OR in April during which he had yelled racist slurs while giving a Nazi salute.
