The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has ended weeks of speculation by appointing Jorge Sampaoli as the national team coach.

JORGE SAMPAOLI HAS been confirmed as the new Argentina coach after agreeing to part ways with Sevilla.

"The contract is through to the 2022 World Cup". The team needs a morale boost after a hard 2016, when Messi threatened to quit the squad after they lost on penalties to Chile in the Copa America Centenario final.

The Argentinians' hopes of reaching the World Cup Finals next year are on a knife edge in the 10-nation South American group in which the top four qualify for Russian Federation.

Argentina is now fifth in qualifying - only the top four get direct spots at Russian Federation 2018.

Sampaoli, identified as Argentina's choice in April but tied to Spanish club Sevilla until the end of the LaLiga season 11 days ago, said his first contact with captain Messi was positive. "I spoke to him yesterday [Wednesday] and he is very enthusiastic". 'We want the world's best player to feel happy being here.

Argentina face Uruguay in Montevideo on Aug 31. His four-match suspension for verbally abusing an official was dropped earlier last month, meaning he is eligible for the next qualifiers in August and September.

"Playing a World Cup is complicated", said Sampaoli.

His first challenge as Albiceleste boss will come with a baptism of fire on 9 June, when he takes on eternal rivals Brazil in a friendly to be played in Australia.

"It's a tournament that has to find you consolidated". The fulfilling of a dream that I've craved for a long time.
