Today Sprint announced it will be the exclusive carrier partner for Essential in the US.

UNLIMITED: Sprint's Unlimited leadership allows customers to enjoy Essential Phone without worry about overages or data usage.

For such a high-profile release, the partnership here is surprising.

"Sprint is uniquely positioned as the best network for Essential Phone with its vast spectrum holdings giving users the network capacity they need to stream 360 video", Sprint's statement reads.

A look behind the scenes, thanks to, reveals that the move isn't really that surprising after all.

Android co-creator Andy Rubin unveiled the highly promising Essential Phone earlier this month, and the device is now available for preorder.

Sprint is expected to offer more details about the Essential Phone soon enough, since it's the exclusive carrier. Going with a single carrier exclusive has not traditionally been a recipe for success.

Sprint is the fourth-ranked carrier in the United States, trailing Verizon (vz), AT&T (t), and T-Mobile (tmus) in total subscribers, making it a somewhat surprising choice for Rubin.

It's 2017, and the Essential Phone will only be sold through Sprint.

De Masi said Rubin partly chose Sprint because he has a close friendship with SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, whose company owns 83% of Sprint, according to USA Today.

In other words, Essential thinks Sprint will gain ground in the next few years, taking a bigger hold of the market and potentially outpacing its rivals. He wanted to create a new kind of company using 21st century methods to build consumer products for the way people want to live in the 21st century. It also features the newest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and 128GB of memory.

The new phone is made of titanium and ceramic and notably lacks any logos, and Essential began taking preorders for the device from usa buyers two weeks ago.

You can pre-order the Essential Phone now. You can take unlocked models of the device to other carriers and the Essential Phone will work fine since it includes all necessary bands.
