The officers put the dog in a police SUV and drove off.

A crash on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago led to the dramatic rescue of a dog who fell into Lake Michigan.

The officers managed to pull the dog out of the water and get him on a leash.

"I never thought I'd be coming to work today and saving a dog's life", Farris said, facing reporters after his heroism.

Two Chicago police officers were called to the scene of a traffic accident involving four cars on North Lake Shore Drive. He started to paddle, but was struggling to get his paws back onto the concrete. Police are trying to find out if he has an owner.

Police originally said they thought the dog jumped out of one of the cars that crashed, but now they are not sure where the dog came from.

The dog was in the custody of the city's Department of Animal Care and Control Tuesday.

Farris said he might be interested in adopting the dog if no one comes forward. They described him as a good dog, a cooperative dog, who didn't have a collar or chip.
