All Mac devices supporting Sierra OS will receive a free upgrade to macOS High Sierra. An advanced architecture optimized for today's massive storage technologies, APFS makes common operations such as copying files and directories instantaneous, helps protect data from power outages and system crashes and keeps files safe and secure with native encryption. macOS High Sierra also maintains complete read-and-write compatibility with previously formatted HFS drives and data and is created to accommodate future advancements in storage technology. These changes will upgrade the Mac to a modern file system, bring a new industry standard for video compression to the Mac, and provide significantly enhanced graphics processing. Many criticisms with the existing HFS+ filesystem, however, include the lack of snapshots, sparse file support, an inefficient implementation of hard links, and a time clock that expires on February 6, 2040.

Developers have access to a beta of macOS High Sierra from today, with a public beta set to launch later this month.

Additionally, Apple introduced important new technologies in macOS, including support for virtual reality, its new file system APFS, and Metal 2. For instance, there's now a persistent sidebar, plus a new view of your photos in chronological order with a filter for key words, to pick out specific photographs.

MacOS added High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC, also known as H.265) can compress video up to 40 percent more than H.264, that is now used for video compression.

Safari also includes intelligent tracking prevention, ensuring that sites no longer have the ability to track you as you browse the internet.

Apple wants its digital assistant to be more helpful in navigating your digital life.

Apple is also giving a nice littler performance boost to all of the native apps that ship with macOS.

The company announced a new edition of Mac OS, High Sierra. The browser also features autoplay blocking: It detects sites that shouldn't be playing video and pauses them.

Federighi went on to announce plans to introduce a version of the Metal API that's tailored for virtual reality alongside High Sierra.

Apple noted how with Metal 2 and the new iMacs, the HTC Vive VR headset can be used with the all-in-one machines and development of VR apps can be done with the latest Unreal graphics engine and the SteamVR software development kit. "We are doubling down on pro content creation in VR".

Apple is also shipping "Metal for VR" with High Sierra. Also, if you edit one of your photos in another platform, those edits auto-sync back to your photo library. There's also a split-view compose window that keeps the message you're replying to on one side and your new mail on the other. Spotlight search results have been improved, with some "top hits" showing up.
