Doctors at MedStar Washington Hospital Center say that since U.S. Rep Steve Scalise arrived there after he was shot in the hip Wednesday morning, "excellent" recovery is now a "good" possibility and that they expect him to walk again. By the time he arrived after being airlifted to the hospital, he was in shock.

Mr Scalise had been at "imminent risk of death" when he was first brought into the hospital on Wednesday, and he received many units of transfused blood, Dr Sava said. The doctor described how a bullet from an assault rifle entered Scalise's hip and traversed his pelvis, shattering blood vessels, bones and internal organs along the way. He remains sedated but has been able to respond to his family.

Scalise, meanwhile, continued to improve, his doctors said.

The gunman who opened fire on a congressional Republican baseball practice in Virginia on Wednesday had a list of names that included several GOP lawmakers, according to multiple reports.

Capitol Police Special Agent Crystal Griner was shot in the ankle but was recovering at the hospital.

If Scalise did not suffer nerve damage and his recovery continues without any complications, "it is possible that within three months or so, he can.be back on his feet", said Dr. Alex Jahangir, an orthopedic trauma surgeon at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, who was not involved in Scalise's care.

"He was as critical as can be", Sava said. "Because of him and the tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer and more unified", Trump said. "So we all owe Steve a big, big thank you", Trump added.

Scalise probably has hundreds of bullet fragments in his body, and doctors don't plan to remove them because usually there is more risk than benefit in doing so, Sava said. Hodgkinson maintained a social media presence that was pro-Bernie Sanders and anti-Republican. Hodgkinson contacted both of his state's Democratic senators frequently, always through email links on their websites, spokesmen said Friday.

The offices of both senators - Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth - turned over the emails to Capitol Police and declined to divulge specifics about their content.

The president spoke about the 51-year-old from Louisiana again Friday during a speech in Miami.
