Inmate takes Illinois hospital employee hostage

An officer fatally shot an armed jail inmate who took two nurses hostage Saturday at a hospital in northern IL after the inmate stole a gun from the corrections officer guarding him, authorities said. Other emergency room patients were transferred or redirected to other hospitals, a spokesperson said. The two nurses who were taken hostage were not severely injured, police said. Patients elsewhere in the hospital haven't been evacuated, though no one was being allowed on to the hospital's campus, authorities said.

Hostage negotiators and the Kane County SWAT team have arrived at Delnor Hospital in the Chicago suburb of Geneva. "I just know that this is something really contained downstairs in one corner of the first floor", Gengler said.

The SWAT team attempted to negotiate with Salters over the telephone for several hours, but eventually, communications broke down, which is when a decision was made to break into the room to rescue the hostage, police said. Pat Gengler with the Kane County Sheriff's Office.

A hostage standoff has ended at a Geneva hospital with the suspect dead.

He could not confirm the reason for the inmate's hospital visit, but said it was common for sick inmates to receive treatment there. Salters, who was charged with stealing a vehicle from the Elgin Police Department, was being retreated at the hospital since May 9.

The Illinois State Police are investigating the incident.

They were then escorted to a conference room, she said, where they stayed for approximately 45 minutes before they were able to leave the hospital.

"We do a lot of training for incidents like this", she said.
